Squiggle tail (squig) homozygotes have a shortened and very curly tail. Intercrosses of heterozygotes yield approximately 25% mutants, consistent with complete penetrance. Both female and male homozygotes breed and live a normal lifespan.

Development

The recessive squiggle tail mutation arose spontaneously in the BALB/cJ inbred strain at The Jackson Laboratory, when that inbred was at generation F239, and has been maintained coisogenic on this background. Sperm was cryopreserved from homozygous males at generation +F2.
