iWSP-2 mice were selectively bred to exhibit high alcohol withdrawal convulsion severity.
John C Crabbe, Oregon Health & Science University
Inbred Withdrawal Seizure-Prone, replicate 2 (iWSP-2) mice were inbred for
20 generations from a selected line of mice developed for high alcohol
withdrawal seizure severity. For the selection, offspring from first litters were
made physically dependent on ethanol and were then tested for ethanol
withdrawal severity. The Withdrawal Seizure-Prone replicate lines were
selectively bred for high alcohol withdrawal convulsion severity after 72hr of
continuous chronic ethanol vapor inhalation. The inbred strain iWSP-2
exhibits seizures approximately 10-fold more severe after an identical
regimen of chronic exposure to ethanol than the inbred Withdrawal Seizure-
Resistant, replicate 1 (iWSR-1) strain that was developed in tandem (Stock No. 025206).
Inbred Withdrawal Seizure-Prone, replicate 2 (iWSP-2) mice where inbred from a line of mice (WSP-2) selectively bred for high alcohol withdrawal convulsion severity after 72hr of continuous chronic ethanol vapor inhalation. The founder stock for selective breeding was the HS/Ibg heterogeneous stock that was developed by Gerald McClearn and colleagues (The Institute for Behavioral Genetics, Boulder, Colorado) as an 8-way inbred strain cross of the following inbred strains obtained from the Cancer Research Genetics Laboratory at UC-Berkeley: A, AKR, BALB/c, C3H/2, C57BL, DBA/2, Is/Bi, and RIII. Generation 29 HS/Ibg mice were purchased, and generation 31 HS mice became the foundation (So) population for selection based on alcohol withdrawal severity. After the
WSP-2 line had been selected for 26 generations, the inbred iWSP-2 strain mice were brother-sister mated for at least 20 generations, after which a rotational breeding scheme based on 9 families was used.
Currently there are no related genes or alleles for this strain.
These mice have reasonable fecundity, and produce about 6 pups per fertile mating pair, with about 75% of mating pairs fertile.
When using the IWSP2/PdxJ mouse strain in a publication, please include JAX stock #025205 in your Materials and Methods section.

Payment for services, products, shipping containers, and shipping costs that are rendered are expected within the payment terms indicated on the invoice or stated by contract. Invoices and account balances in arrears of stated terms may result in The Jackson Laboratory pursuing collection activities including but not limited to outside agencies and court filings.
The Jackson Laboratory has rigorous genetic quality control and mutant gene genotyping programs to ensure the genetic background of JAX® Mice strains as well as the genotypes of strains with identified molecular mutations. JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project. We do not guarantee breeding performance and therefore suggest that investigators order more than one breeding pair to avoid delays in their research.
