Description

This Y chromosome consomic was created by substituting the SJL/J Y chromosome with the Y chromosome from B10.S-H2^s/SgMcdJ. Following immunization to induce experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), young consomic males develop a significant increase in incidence and severity suggesting that a Y chromosome polymorphism is capable of modifying EAE susceptibility. This mouse strain may be useful in studies of EAE and other autoimmune diseases.

Detailed description

SJL/J mice exhibit a variable susceptibility to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the murine autoimmune model of multiple sclerosis. Females respond to immunization (PLP139-151-CFA) with a consistent disease incidence and severity regardless of age, while males exhibit an progressive age-dependent response. Young males (4-8 weeks) are relatively resistant, but become increasingly susceptible with age. To address the sexual dimorphism, this Y chromosome consomic was created by substituting the SJL/J Y chromosome (origin: M. m. domesticus) with the Y chromosome (origin: M. m. musculus) from B10.S-H2^s/SgMcdJ. Following immunization young consomic males develop a significant increase in EAE incidence and severity suggesting that a Y chromosome polymorphism is capable of modifying EAE susceptibility. This mouse strain may be useful in studies of EAE and other autoimmune diseases.

Development

Dr. Cory Teuscher from the University of Vermont developed this chromosome Y consomic by replacing the Y chromosome from the B10.S-H2^s/SgMcdJ (Stock #001953) donor strain into the SJL/J host strain using a series of backcrosses (>N15). The strain was donated to The Jackson Laboratory Repository in 2011.
