Mice homozygous for the Grhl1m1J mutation are smaller than normal and develop an ichthyotic balding first evident at 1.5 weeks of age. They are nearly bald by wean age and continue to have sparse coats throughout adulthood.
This mutation arose spontaneously at The Jackson Laboratory in 2006 on a mutant subline of B6Smn.C3-Faslgld/J which carried the KitlSl-23J mutation. During 5 generations of backcross-intercross to C57BL/6J there was no phenotypic evidence of the Faslgld or KitlSl-23J mutations so these are believed to be bred out of this strain.
