Description

Mice homozygous for the spontaneous hepatitis mutation present with a pale thin tale, bloated abdomen and small body size. The liver is pale and they develop severe hepatitis, with reduced levels of albumin, amylase, and total serum protein, and usually die by three weeks of age, although some have lived to four weeks of age.

The liver is pale and they develop severe hepatitis, with reduced levels of albumin, amylase, and total serum protein, and usually die by three weeks of age, although some have lived to four weeks of age. Heterozgyotes are viable and fertile.

Development

The spontaneous hepatitis mutation arose spontaneously in the progeny of a BALB/cJ x A/J cross in the laboratory of Dr. Luanne Peters at The Jackson Laboratory in approximately 2001 and has been maintained on this segregating background by sibling inbreeding progeny tested heterozygotes. In 2011 this strain reached F14.
