Description

The ILS (Inbred Long Sleep) strain is the product of a selection for long duration (sleep time) of loss-of-righting response following high dose ip administration of ethanol. This strain and ISS are the progenitors used to generate the ILSXISS recombinant inbred strain set used in QTL mapping analysis.

Detailed description

The ILS (Inbred Long Sleep) strain is the product of a selection for long duration (sleep time) of loss-of-righting response following high dose (3.3g/kg) intraperitoneal administration of ethanol. At the 18th generation of inbreeding LS (long-sleep) mice exhibited a mean sleep time of 2 hours This strain and ISS are the progenitors used to generate the ILSXISS recombinant inbred strain set used in QTL mapping analysis.

Development

The ILS and LS strains were developed from a heterogenous stock derived from an 8 way cross (A, AKR, BALB/c, C3H/2, C57BL, DBA/2, IS/Bi and RIII) created at the Cancer Research Genetics Laboratory at the University of California, Berkley. ILS is the product of inbreeding LS, a line selected for long duration (sleep time) of loss-of-righting response following high dose (3.3g/kg) intraperitoneal administration of ethanol. At the 18th generation of inbreeding LS (long-sleep) mice exhibited a mean sleep time of 2 hours. The name LS became ILS (inbred long-sleep) in the 20th generation of inbreeding.

This strain and ISS/IbgTej (inbred short-sleep) were used to generate the ILSXISS recombinant inbred set donated to The Jackson Laboratory Repository in 2009 by Dr. Thomas E. Johnson and Dr. Jerry Stitzel at the University of Colorado, Boulder. An earlier RI set, LSXSS, was created using the LS and SS mice - the Repository does not maintain this set.
