Mice that are homozygous for this allele are viable, fertile, normal in size and do not display any gross physical or behavioral abnormalities. When bred to mice with a cre recombinase gene under the control of a promoter of interest, exon 9 is excised in the tissue of interest. Full knockouts of this gene are embryonic lethal before embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5). This strain may be useful in studies of RNA processing.

A targeting vector was used to introduce a loxP-flanked neomycin resistance cassette to intron 8, and an additional loxP site to intron 9 of the gene. The construct was electroporated into 129P2/OlaHsd-derived E14 embryonic stem (ES) cells. The neomycin cassette was excised with a C57BL/6 background EIIa-Cre, leaving loxP sites on either side of exon 9. This strain was backcrossed 4 times to C57BL/6 by the donating laboratory.
