These mice possess loxP sites on either side of exon 2 in the Smad1, MAD homolog 1 (Drosophila) gene. When crossed with a Cre recombinase-expressing strain, this strain is useful in eliminating tissue-specific expression of the gene. Literature associated with this gene suggests the mice may be useful in studies of reproduction, development, the cardiovascular system and cancer.

These mice possess loxP sites on either side of exon 2 in the targeted gene. Mice that are homozygous for the floxed allele are viable, fertile, normal in size and do not display any gross physical or behavioral abnormalities. When crossed with a Cre recombinase-expressing strain, this strain is useful in eliminating tissue-specific expression of the gene. Homozygous knock out mice are embryonic lethal. Literature associated with this gene suggests the mice may be useful in studies of reproduction, development, the cardiovascular system and cancer.
A loxP-flanked neomycin cassette was placed in intron 1 of the gene and an additional loxP site was inserted in intron 2. Targeting was carried out using a 129SvEv-derived embryonic stem cell line introduced to C57BL/6J blastocysts. This strain was backcrossed to C57BL/6 for three generations by the donating laboratory.
