Carriers of the helicopter ears mutation have ear pinna angled outward from the head rather than upward, smaller bodies than normal, and smaller genitals, although fertility appears unaffected.
The helicopter ears mutation arose spontaneously in a B6129SF2/J colony at The Jackson Laboratory in 2006 and was maintained by sibling inbreeding for seven generations before sperm was cryopreserved in 2008 from a heterozygous male.
