These LacZ reporter mice are useful in studies to identify olfactory sensory neuronal development and topography in glomeruli in the olfactory bulb.

Vomeronasal sensory neurons that express the vomeronasal receptor V1rb2 also co-express the taulacZ fusion protein by virtue of IRES-mediated co-translation. These neurons can be revealed by histochemistry of beta-galactosidase enzymatic activity, or by immunofluorescence with anti-beta-galactosidase antibodies.
An IRES-taulacZ-LNL sequence was introduced just downstream of the V1rb2 stop codon in 129P2/OlaHsd derived ES cell line E14. To excise the neomycin resistance sequence, the resulting mouse was bred with a mouse carrying Tg(EIIa-cre)C5379Lmgd, a transgene generated in FVB/N but having been backcrossed at least four generations to C57BL/6 before this cross and having unknown pedigree prior to that. The resulting mice, lacking the neomycin resistance cassette and retaining one loxP site, were intercrossed and V1rb2tm1Mom homozygotes were selected that were devoid of the EIIa-cre transgene.

Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project. We do not guarantee breeding performance and therefore suggest that investigators order more than one breeding pair to avoid delays in their research.
