Homozygotes are generally non-viable. Surviving mice show a 30-40% decrease in body weight and their inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSC) are decreased in cortical slice cultures. Expression of both alpha and beta transcripts of the gene is knocked out.
The last exon of the gene was deleted by homologous recombination in a 129-derived embryonic stem (ES) cell line. Correctly targeted ES cells were injected into C57BL/6 blastocysts. This strain is on a mixed background composed of C57BL/6 and 129.
