These mice carry a spontaneous mutation at the glutamate receptor, metabotropic 1 (Grm1) locus and show small body size and ataxia.

Detailed description

Mice homozygous for the recoil wobbler 3 Jackson mutation have a slightly smaller body size and a wobbly gait, causing loss of balance when walking, usually visible by 2 weeks of age.

Development

The recoil wobbler 3 Jackson mutation arose spontaneously in 2004 in C57BL/6J at The Jackson Laboratory when that inbred was at generation F224. It has been maintained by sibling mating and reached generation F224+4 in June 2005.

Molecular note: This mutation was shown to be an allele of rcw by a complementation test versus recoil wobbler 2 Jackson. A c.1010G>A transition was identified which results in a glycine to glutamic acid (p.G337E) amino acid substitution. This is identical to the mutation in Grm1^rcw-4J and both probably result from a single mutational event.
