The "hairless" mutation (hr) has as a spontaneous retroviral integration of murine leukemia proviral sequences into intron 6 of the hairless gene (Hr) on chromosome 14; causing aberrant splicing of the gene. This colony was developed by Dr. Alan Poland at McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, University of Wisconsin Medical School by backcrossing the HRS inbred strain to DBA/2 and selecting for the hr allele.

When maintaining a live colony, heterozygous females are bred to homozygous males. Most females do not nurse young well.
