Mice from this congenic strain carry the El2EL quantitative trait locus (QTL) from the EL/SuzSeyFrk strain and are characterized by a susceptibility to seizures.
El2 was initially identified as a QTL contributing to idiopathic epilepsy in the EL/Suz inbred strain. It maps to chromosome 2. This locus was backcrossed onto the ABP/Le background until N6 then sibling mated to generate mice homozygous for the El2 locus. These mice have been subsequently maintained by sibling mating. The El2 congenic interval in this strain encompasses D2Mit43 and D2Mit21 sequences from EL/Suz, but has ABP/Le sequences at D2Mit11 and D2Mit55.

General Note | The EL mouse strain was developed from mice with an increased succeptibility for epilepsy. These mice were first reported as a spontaneous mutation arising in the DDY strain. The succeptibility for epilepsy was subsequently shown to be the result of alleles at two or more loci. |

Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project. We do not guarantee breeding performance and therefore suggest that investigators order more than one breeding pair to avoid delays in their research.
