Detailed description

The Y Chromosome in these mice is derived from the SWR/J strain.

Development

This consomic strain bears the Y Chromosome from SWR/J on the C57BL/6JEi background and is segregating for agouti, from SWR/J, and nonagouti from C57BL/6JEi. It was generated by repeatedly backcrossing an agouti male carrier to a female C57BL/6JEi. In 1996 embryos were generated for cryopreservation by crossing agouti (A/a) males at generation N20 or greater with agouti (A/a) or nonagouti black (a/a) females from the colony also at generation N20 or greater. Thus, some of the cryorecovered pups will be agouti colored and some will be nonagouti black, but all males carry the SWR/J Y Chromosome. Nonagouti black pups may still retain SWR/J derived sequence near the agouti locus.
