This consomic is valuable in the study of sex determination. The TOrl /+ XYMA/MyJ offspring, from the cross of B6.Cg-TOrl /+ females with C57BL/6JEi-Chr YMA/MyJ/EiJ males, are sex reversed, with ovarian tissue development.
This consomic strain bears the Y Chromosome from MA/MyJ on the C57BL/6JEi background and is segregating for agouti, from MA/MyJ, and nonagouti from C57BL/6JEi. It was generated by repeatedly backcrossing an agouti male carrier to a female C57BL/6JEi. In 1996 embryos were generated for cryopreservation by crossing C57BL/6JEi females with A/a males consomic for Chr YMA/MyJ at generation N19 or greater. Thus, some of the cryorecovered pups will be agouti colored and some will be nonagouti black, but all males carry the My/MyJ Y Chromosome. Nonagouti black pups may still retain MA/MyJ derived sequence near the agouti locus.
