Detailed description

Mice homozygous for the juvenile alopecia mutation have curled vibrissae shortly after birth, are runted and have wavy hair. Foci of alopecia appear on the dorsal trunk by 18 days of age and hairs are bifurcated, grossly distorted and lack a cuticle. Hairs from heterozygotes have focal distortions and breaks.

Development

Juvenile alopecia was identified in the C3H/HeJ inbred strain at The Jackson Laboratory in 1991 and was maintained by sibling inbreeding, primarily heterozygous females with homozygous males. In 1995 embryos were generated for cryopreservation from C3H/HeJ females bred to homozygous males at generation F14 and in 2001 more embryos were cryopreserved from heterozygous female and homozygous male progeny of the initial cryopreserved pups.
