Description

These mice carry a spontaneous revertant mutation at the Oca2 locus characterized by normal hair and eye pigmentation.

Detailed description

Mice homozygous or heterozygous for the Oca2^p-un+5J allele exhibit normal hair and eye pigmentation. Heterozygotes also carrying a mutant Oca2^p allele that, when homozygous, produces a recognizable pink-eyed dilution phenotype, can be distinguished by test-crossing them to known heterozygotes or pink-eyed dilution mice. Homozygotes and heterozygotes for this revertant allele are phenotypically indisting uishable from wild-type.

Development

The C57BL/6J-Oca2^p-un+5J strain was created by mating Oca2^p-un individuals having at least 50% wild-type pigmentation to nonmosaic Oca2^p-un/Oca2^p-un sibs. Pigmented offspring of this mating were intercrossed to obtain mice homozygous for the revertant allele.
