Description

These mice carry a spontaneous mutation at the Mitf locus characterized by small, red eyes and a white coat with pigmented spots around neck or tail.

Detailed description

Mutations at the Mitf locus affect eye size, pigmentation, and the capacity for secondary bone resorption. Mice homozygous for the red-eyed white spontaneous mutation Mitf^mi-rw have some pigmentation around the neck and have small red eyes.

Development

The red-eyed white recessive mutation (Mitf^Mi-rw) arose spontaneously in the CBA/J strain.
