Test matings failed to produce Pgm2a-m1Ehs homozygotes, indicating that this is a recessive embryonic lethal mutation. No abnormal phenotype has been reported in the heterozygote.
In 2018 the gene symbol Pgm1 was replaced with Pgm2 to be more consistent with human gene nomenclature. The recessive lethal Pgm2b-m1Ehs allele was induced by triethylenemelamine treatment of a DBA/2J (Pgm2b) male, which was then crossed to a C57BL/6J (Pgm2a) female (Soares 1979). This mutation was imported from Dr. E. R. Soares into the laboratory of Dr. Eva Eicher at The Jackson Laboratory in 1979 and was maintained by breeding to C57BL/6J and C3H/HeJ (Pgm2c) in alternating generations. A Pgm2b-m1Ehs/Pgm2a male was imported and mated to a C3H/HeJ female, then the Pgm2b-m1Ehs/Pgm2c offspring were mated to C57BL/6J and their Pgm2b-m1Ehs/Pgm2a offspring were bred to C57BL/6J. Compound heterozygotes were screened by cellulose acetate gel electrophoresis to determine genotype. This system of breeding continued until 1983 when embryos were generated for cryopreservation by breeding Pgm2c/Pgm2b-m1Ehs males with C57BL/6J females. The cryorecovered pups will be a mix of Pgm2b-m1Ehs/Pgm2a and Pgm2a/Pgm2c. To continue the line, the Pgm2b-m1Ehs/Pgm2a animals should be bred to C3H/HeJ (Pgm2c) and the Pgm2b-m1Ehs/Pgm2c offspring should then be bred to C57BL/6J.

The Jackson Laboratory has rigorous genetic quality control and mutant gene genotyping programs to ensure the genetic background of JAX® Mice strains as well as the genotypes of strains with identified molecular mutations. JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project. We do not guarantee breeding performance and therefore suggest that investigators order more than one breeding pair to avoid delays in their research.
