Detailed description

This strain carries a metacentric Y chromosome that can be identified by non-specific staining of metaphase chromosomes making it a useful cytogenetic marker. (Burgoyne et al. 1988)

Development

This spontaneously derived metacentric Y chromosome was imported from Harwell by Dr. Eva Eicher at The Jackson Laboratory and backcrossed from an unspecified non-inbred genetic background onto BALB/cBy for seven generations before embryos were generated for freezing by breeding N7F1 carrier males with BALB/cBy females.
