These mice carry two linked, spontaneous white spotting mutations, underwhite (Slc45a2uw) and belted 2 Jackson (Adamts20bt-2J), and are characterized by having a dorsal and a ventral unpigmented patch posterior to the midline of the trunk.Read More +

Mice homozygous for the recessive Adamts20bt-2J mutation have a dorsal and a ventral unpigmented patch posterior to the midline of the trunk with the dorsal patch usually being larger than the ventral patch. These patches run in a more transverse orientation across the mouse than lengthwise and often extend around the sides of the mouse to form a white belt.
In 1962 the underwhite mutation arose spontaneously in C57BL/6J and in 1968 the belted 2 Jackson mutation also arose spontaneously in C57BL/6J. Each was individually kept coisogenic through sibling intercrossing and in 1975 a belted 2 Jackson homozygous female at generation F22 was bred to an underwhite homozygous male at generation F13 and their double heterozygous offspring were intercrossed to generate a double homozygote. That double homozygous male was crossed to a C57BL/6J female and the obligate double heterozygotes were intercrossed to again obtain a double homozygote. This cycle of backcross-intercross to C57BL/6J was done for many generations, with 4 generations of sibling intercrossing double homozygotes at N5 before backcrossing to N6, and in 1982 embryos were generated for cryopreservation from double homozygotes at generation N9F3 and N9F4.
|Gene Symbol and Name||Slc45a2, solute carrier family 45, member 2|
|Strain of Origin||C57BL/6J|
|Molecular Note||Molecular analysis reveals a 7 bp deletion in Exon 3, which results in a 43 amino acid frameshift followed by a premature stop at codon 308. The resulting protein lacks the C terminal 6 transmembrane domains.|
