Detailed description

This C57BL/6J congenic, homozygous for a polymorphic variant (Cd5^a) expressed on T cells and a subset of B cells, is useful for transplantation studies requiring tracking of T cells or B cells.

Development

The Cd5^a polymorphism is found in many inbred strains including C3H/He, CBA/J, DBA/1J, DBA/2J, and MA/J; the Cd5^b polymorphism is instead found in AKR/J, C58/J, BALB/c, C57BL/6J and many others. To generate this strain, Dr. Marianna Cherry backcrossed Cd5^a onto C57BL/6J from a C57BL/6J congenic strain that carried seven markers including caracul, steel, and hammertoe, with many of the markers having had substantial CBA/Ca in their ancestry. When the other mutations were bred out, this congenic was sibling intercrossed to homozygosity. In 1993 embryos were cryopreserved from mice at approximately generation N12F63.
