Detailed description

This B6/By strain carries the H2^b histocompatibility allele from BALB/cBy along with an allele affecting mandible shape (Mdmg1^BALB/cBy) that confers elgonation of the dorsal edge of thecondylar process. The Mdmg1 locus has been located proximal to the H2 locus.

Development

Dr. Donald Bailey, then at University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, began to generate a panel of congenic lines with differential loci that determine histocompatibility by crossing BALB/cBy females with C57BL/6By males, and then backcrossing at each generation to a C57BL/6J male. At backcross generation 5 orthotopic tailskin graft tests were done to identify lines bearing BALB/cBy-derived congenic intervals with histocompatibility loci. This backcrossing, with testing, was continued until siblings at backcross generation 11 or more were intercrossed to breed the congenic interval to homozygosity and each strain was maintained by sibling inbreeding (Bailey, 1975). Dr. Bailey transferred the mice to The Jackson Laboratory when he joined the staff in 1967. The strain was cryopreserved in 1981 at generation N15F44.
