This B6/By congenic strain carries the ‘minor’ histocompatibility allele, H19hc, from BALB/cBy.
Dr. Donald Bailey, then at University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, began to generate a panel of congenic lines with differential loci that determine histocompatibility by crossing BALB/cBy females with C57BL/6By males, and then backcrossing at each generation to a C57BL/6J male. At backcross generation 5 orthotopic tailskin graft tests were done to identify lines bearing BALB/cBy-derived congenic intervals with histocompatibility loci. This backcrossing, with testing, was continued until siblings at backcross generation 11 or more were intercrossed to breed the congenic interval to homozygosity and each strain was maintained by sibling inbreeding (Bailey, 1975). Dr. Bailey transferred the mice to The Jackson Laboratory when he joined the staff in 1967. The strain was cryopreserved in 1980 at generation NE11F46.

JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project. We do not guarantee breeding performance and therefore suggest that investigators order more than one breeding pair to avoid delays in their research.
