Scientific Research Services for JAX Faculty
JAX Microbial Genomic Services, under leadership by Mark Adams, works with JAX investigators to design, execute, and interpret microbiome studies in the broader context of each research program. Dedicated space is available for DNA isolation and for amplification. The core provides DNA and RNA extraction from many different biological specimens including stool, swabs, and biological fluids using both QiaCube HT automation and manual methods. Several microbial profiling approaches are available. 16S rRNA V1-3 sequencing provides genus to species level resolution of the taxonomic composition of the sample. Metagenomic sequencing provides a much broader perspective on the composition, including gene content of the sample. Metatranscriptomics (RNA-seq) provides additional information about gene expression in the microbial community. Analytical strategies based on experimental design incorporate analysis of taxonomic and genic differences across time or cohort. In addition to Illumina-based sequencing, the core also provides access to PacBio long-read sequencing for full-length 16S rRNA sequencing, full genome assembly, and metagenome analysis.
