RNA Biology- RNA modifications and Diseases
Sudheesh received his MSc in Biotechnology under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India in 2012 for his thesis on developing a LAMP-based molecular diagnostic method for the detection of Leptospira. Later he worked on characterizing the neurovirulence of the Chikungunya virus from 2012-2014 at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Kerala, India. Sudheesh received his Ph.D. in Biotechnology at RGCB, in 2014-2019 for his research work conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Rakesh Laishram studying the mechanism and regulation of 3'-processing by the non-canonical Poly(A) polymerase- Star-PAP and how it affects the cancer cell invasion. Sudheesh is currently a Postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Dr. Shengdong Ke at The Jackson laboratory and studies the mechanism of m6A RNA modification and how it affects cancer progression. Reflecting on the diverse molecular functions of m6A, many studies demonstrated that the enzymes/associated protein factors- writers, readers, and erasers, are critically involved in human diseases including cancer. Currently, little is known about the underlying mechanism which holds the great potential to manipulate the m6A mRNA modification to achieve novel therapeutics in human disease. Sudheesh’s post-doc work would provide deep insights into the m6A mediated post-transcriptional regulation with great potential for novel cancer therapeutics.
