Maine loses Peter Alfond

Peter Alfond, a director of the Harold Alfond Foundation, died of complications from malaria on July 10th. Peter, the son of Harold Alfond, had served for many years as a senior executive at Dexter Shoe Company. He went on to pursue a variety of philanthropic interests in Maine, New England, Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean. He was committed to economic development in Maine, and to helping community, educational and healthcare institutions develop and sustain new programs and facilities. The Harold Alfond Foundation, after much consideration, made the decision to fund JAX’s Maine Cancer Genome Initiative (MCGI) — an innovative project that is bringing cancer care to the community setting throughout Maine.

The thoughts and prayers of our Laboratory community go out to Peter’s family and his many friends. He will be sincerely missed.
