Bar Harbor, Maine – Kenneth H. Fasman, Ph.D., a biomedical researcher whose work in the academic, nonprofit and business sectors has made him a leader in scientific collaborative research management, has been named The Jackson Laboratory’s new vice president for strategic initiatives.
In announcing the newly created position, JAX President and CEO Edison Liu, M.D., notes that the Laboratory has dramatically expanded its collaborative research projects in the U.S. and abroad and its facilities, including the new Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Conn.
Over the last 15 years Fasman has built many connections with JAX, serving on the Laboratory’s scientific advisory board and advising the Genetic Resource Sciences group. He currently serves on the JAX board of scientific counselors.
“Ken is uniquely qualified to help us to drive the Laboratory’s long-term growth while accelerating our mission to advance human health. He brings deep experience in science project management, understands organizational dynamics and is familiar with our unique academic culture and community.” Liu says, “In his new role he will focus on key strategic initiatives such as the collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, which Ken helped us to orchestrate, as well as integrate our campuses in Maine, Connecticut and California.”
Fasman joins the Laboratory from the Adelson Medical Research Foundation in Needham, Mass., where he has been vice president and chief scientific officer since 2008. From 1998 to 2008, he worked with the international pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, rising to director of drug development strategy and performance.
From 1992 to 1998, Fasman worked on the human genome project at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and later at the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research. While earning his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Hopkins, Fasman cofounded a laboratory software and systems design consulting firm, BME Systems, Inc.
The Bar Harbor-based Jackson Laboratory has facilities in Sacramento, Calif., and Ellsworth, Maine, as well as the new Connecticut genomic medicine institute. Institutional collaborative partners include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the University of California, Davis. The institution’s international presence is also growing, with labs and collaborations in South Korea and Australia.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center. It employs more than 1,600 staff, and its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.
