Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, JAX has worked to support you with all of your research resiliency efforts. Now, we are pleased to introduce SARS-CoV-2 Testing for your mouse colonies.
Several variants of SARS-CoV-2 have been identified in human populations since the beginning of the pandemic.
In contrast to the original coronavirus, studies have demonstrated certain strains of wild type (i.e. non-hACE2 bearing) mice are vulnerable to infection by these variants. Specifically, the data suggest the SARS-CoV-2 variants B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and P.1 have mutated and can now infect mice via the endogenous mouse Ace2 receptor. Routine monitoring to identify early outbreaks is currently the best protection for both research colonies and vivarium staff.
In light of these findings, JAX has launched the first PCR-based testing program to detect SARS-CoV-2 and associated variants in mice. In addition to screening JAX mice, we are offering this service to institutions to monitor their own colonies for potential infections.
For routine monitoring, JAX recommends routine sentinel testing, with the frequency varying depending on exposure risks and current containment measures. For guidance on establishing a testing protocol, please work with your local veterinary staff or contact micetech@jax.org. For more information about JAX's internal testing, please visit the COVID Response Page.
Should any of your colonies test positive, JAX can provide resources and guidance to get your research back on track — from variant sequencing to expert consulting in containment and recovery efforts.
The process is simple. Order your test kit, ship your samples back, and await results.
We aim to test and provide results back to you within 24 hours of receiving your samples.
In the event that all samples test negative, you will receive an email with the data and results.
If we identify a positive test sample and notify you of the finding, first consult with your veterinary staff and your institutional health office for next steps. If you have questions about the test result a JAX representative can call. In addition to the initial testing service, we can provide variant sequencing and expert consulting in containment and recovery efforts.
