Workshop on Stereotaxic Surgery in the Laboratory Mouse (in Paris, France)

This is a NEW one-of-a-kind workshop on mouse stereotaxic surgery being held in Paris, France. Participants attending this course will learn how to: use different types of stereotaxic devices, read a Vernier scale, read a brain atlas and define bregma. Hands-on laboratory sessions with your own stereotaxic equipment include animal positioning on the stereotaxic device, intracranial drilling, intracranial injections, and brain cannulation into the lateral ventricle, as well as bi-lateral brain cannulation.

The Jackson Laboratory and Sorbonne Universités are pleased to offer a NEW one-of-a-kind workshop on stereotaxic surgery in the laboratory mouse in Paris, France. This three-day intensive hands-on workshop is for those wishing to obtain training in the use of stereotaxic surgical techniques for brain manipulation. This course will be held in English. In addition to learning about different types of stereotaxic devices, this workshop also covers:

Survival Surgery Standards
How to Read a Vernier scale and Brain Atlas
Animal Positioning (Placing Ear Bars)
How to Define Bregma
Intracranial Drilling
Intracranial Injections
Brain Cannulation (Including ICVC and Bi-Lateral)
CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) Collection

*This workshop may be used for continuing education units for AALAS re-certification.

The 2020 course schedule is still under construction. Please see the 2019 schedule linked below. The first date of the 2020 course will be Wednesday, July 1st and the last will be Friday, July 3rd. Please plan on arriving the day before the course starts and leaving the day after the course ends.

Scholarship applications will be reviewed periodically. Applicants will be notified by email with award information.

Registration Fee: $1500 (Includes all course materials and meals. Participants are responsible for all travel costs)

As part of the KentGivesBack program, Kent Scientific Corporation has generously sponsored a full scholarship award for this workshop. Additional scholarship funds are available for this course and made possible by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, foundation awards and gifts or donations to The Jackson Laboratory.

The Jackson Laboratory strongly encourages individuals who are from underrepresented populations to apply. Underrepresented populations are defined by the National Institutes of Health. (See also NIH NOT-OD-20-031 for definitions regarding under-represented groups).

For scholarship awards, first preference will be given to students, post-doctoral fellows, or junior faculty from populations under-represented in the biomedical sciences currently enrolled in, or working at, a U.S. institution.

Scholarship funds will offset a portion of the registration fee for educational programs; in rare cases, scholarships will be awarded to cover the full registration fee. Even if awarded a full scholarship, funds will not cover travel costs to and from the event or the Highseas lodging fee. Funds will not be sent to scholarship awardees; rather funds are credited to applicants who register to take the course.

A written statement of financial need (100-250 words)
A written statement describing how the course/workshop will foster your academic or career objectives (100-250 words)
