28th Annual Short Course on Experimental Models of Human Cancer

Location: The Jackson Laboratory and the Highseas Conference Center - The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor ME

The annual Cancer Short Course remains the signature cancer training program at JAX and is strategically aligned with the ongoing Workshop on Techniques in Modeling Human Cancer in Mice. The program purposefully provides a broad survey of the cancer research and experimental modeling from systems and computational genetics, to the tumor microenvironment and tumor progression, to inflammation and immunotherapy. The immersive, residential approach of the Cancer Short Course provides rich and extensive content and skills for up to 50 trainees.

About

Unlike a semester-long graduate course or an academic seminar series spread across a full year or more, the course delivers a large amount of material into an intensive training period. The program is 70% seminar-based and 30% workshop-based, including computational workshops. The program is designed around a daily schedule that balances lectures, hands-on workshops, informal meetings with faculty, and evening seminar and poster sessions. Over eight days, participants interact directly with faculty, JAX Cancer Center scientists, patient advocates and medical oncologists to gain broad exposure and knowledge as it relates to human cancer.

It is held in a retreat-like setting and is limited to 50 participants to ensure a supportive, interactive learning atmosphere.

Highseas lodging 1

Provided lodging will be at the gorgeous Highseas Conference Center, a Georgian style mansion built in 1912, overlooking the entrance to Frenchman’s Bay and adjacent to Acadia National Park. This casual, dormitory-style housing consists of shared bedrooms and bathrooms. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks will be provided at Highseas, including a lobster and steak dinner one night during the event. Wireless internet access is provided throughout the building and laundry facilities are available on site.

Bar Harbor is serviced by two airports:

Hancock County/Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) – 20 minutes away
Bangor Airport (BGR) – 1hr 15 minutes away

Bar Harbor is approximately 5 hours by car from the greater Boston area. Rental cars are available from Hertz at either nearby airport. Additionally, there is a free Island Explorer bus system which can be used around the island and the national park.
