9:30 - Workshop: Understanding Communication Styles
How do you communicate? What - or who – are your communication challenges? In this session you will assess your own communication style and learn how to work with colleagues who have different styles. Learn how communication style influences your ability to effectively convey your ideas, goals, or expectations in the lab or workplace and strategies for improving communication with your PI or boss, your peers, and those you supervise.

11:00 - Panel: Communication Throughout Your Career
Everyone faces communication challenges in their careers. Panelists in management positions across diverse scientific careers share their communication tips as mentors and as mentees. Panelists will also discuss communication challenges in their professional lives and how they resolved these situations. Panelists will come from a variety of careers, ranging from research and teaching to management and operations - from academia as well as from commercial environments. Use this opportunity to learn more about effective communication as well as exploring career options for bioscience PhDs.

1:00 - Workshop: Evaluating Your Fit with a Prospective Supervisor/Mentor
Thinking about a new position? How will you know if your prospective boss is the right one for you? Will you get the type of support and mentoring you want? In this workshop, learn strategies for assessing a prospective supervisor’s management and communication style during an interview. And put yourself on the other side: how will you assess whether someone is a good fit for your group?

3:00 - Workshop: Managing Supervisor-Employee Relationships
Are you getting what you need from your supervisor or mentor? And conversely, how do you ensure that your employee/mentee understands your expectations? In this workshop we will explore communication strategies to help you develop and maintain productive supervisor-employee and mentor-mentee relationships. We will review tips for defining and understanding expectation from both sides and practice ways you can work to resolve conflicts when they arise.
