A message from Ed Liu to JAX employees about the Derek Chauvin Verdict
April 21, 2021
Yesterday’s announcement of the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd was an emotional experience for many of us. And while the trial was regarding one case, this case is one of all too many instances where racism and violence have resulted in the tragic loss of human life.
It is my perspective that the verdict holding the defendant accountable for his actions in the death of George Floyd was a step in the right direction, but the path toward social justice for all is long, and it will require continuous effort and steadfast engagement. Any relief or satisfaction with the verdict we might be feeling will not change the fact that George Floyd is dead and his family has suffered an irreparable loss. Any temporary relief we feel should also not lull us to think that the problem has been solved. The cumulative effect of violence, especially when propelled by systemic racism, poses a constant challenge to vulnerable populations. This is particularly true for our Black colleagues and those of us who have felt the painful sting of racism, discrimination and xenophobia reinforced by the dark history of slavery in America.
JAX is committed to creating and maintaining a culture that celebrates and promotes diversity, equity and inclusion. The path to justice is a long one, but as we band together, supporting one another, we will traverse that distance one step at a time.
