Economic Impact

As an independent, 501(c)3, nonprofit research institution with a 2018 Operating Budget of $395 million, JAX has significant and lasting economic impact on its local communities.

IN MAINE:

  • The total economic impact of JAX activities on Maine in 2018 was $783 million.
  • With nearly 1,650 full and part-time employees based in Maine, JAX is the 17th largest private employer in Maine and the largest by far in Hancock and Washington counties.
  • JAX paid $127 million in wages & benefits to Maine-based employees in 2018.
  • JAX employees live in 84 different Maine cities and towns in 12 of Maine’s 16 counties.
  • As of December 31, 2018, JAX employed 1,444 individuals at the Bar Harbor facility, including 191 Ph.D.s, M.D.s and D.V.M.s. An additional 40 staff members work at the Charles E. Hewett Center in Ellsworth, with expected growth to 100 employees in 2019.
  • In 2018, JAX employment grew 300% faster than Maine’s total employment rate, and wages grew 89% faster than the state average.
  • Of the 253 new employees JAX hired in 2018, 33% came from out of state. Many were Mainers who wanted to return home to work and raise or start a family. The average age of employees was 32, and average pay and benefits was nearly $65,000.
  • In 2018, JAX invested $1.1 million in education and training programs for over 1,000 employees.

  • JAX with nearly 500 Maine vendors, paying them about $25 million in 2018.
  • In 2018, JAX invested $56.6 million in capital projects in Maine, indirectly creating 435 jobs.
  • JAX operations generated $25.5 million in Maine fees and taxes in 2018.
  • JAX uses 11,000 tons of wood pellets annually to supply its wood pellet boiler for heating and cooling. This is nearly $2 million spent on Maine wood pellets a year.

IN CONNECTICUT:

  • The total economic impact of JAX activities on Connecticut in 2018 was $187 million.
  • Total operational spending in Connecticut was $53.8 million in 2018.
  • JAX paid $44.9 million in wages & benefits to Connecticut-based employees in 2018, with an average salary of $94,000.
  • JAX employees live in 75 different communities across the state.
  • In 2018, JAX employed 419 individuals at the Farmington facility, including 188 Ph.D.s and M.D.s.
  • 66% of staff are from Connecticut, and the average age is 33.
  • In 2018, JAX paid $9.0 million to 204 Connecticut vendors located in 68 cities and towns, with vendors spending $26.4 million in their communities.
  • Since 2012, JAX has worked with 565 vendors in 124 cities and towns for a total of $150 million in sales for Connecticut businesses.

IN CALIFORNIA:

  • The total economic impact of JAX activities on California in 2018 was $254.3 million.
  • Total operational spending in California was $115 million in 2018.
  • JAX paid $27 million in wages & benefits to California-based employees in 2018.
  • In 2018, JAX employed 378 individuals in California.
  • JAX hired 34 new employees in 2018, with an average age of 31.
  • In 2018, JAX paid $18 million to 445 California vendors.
  • JAX operations generated $7 million in California fees and taxes in 2018.
  • Visitors to JAX spent over $2.4 million in California.
