Postdocs rank Jackson among top 10 "Best Places to Work"
Each year the life-sciences magazine The Scientist conducts an international survey to determine which research institutions and universities provide the best experience for postdoctoral associates. For 2008, The Jackson Laboratory was ranked #9 among U.S. research institutions. The study results are published in the March edition of the magazine.
More than 2,400 U.S. postdoctoral associates participated in the survey, which measured a wide range of factors, from quality of training, facilities and infrastructure to funding to family and personal life. In the article accompanying the survey results in The Scientist, Jackson Laboratory President and CEO Rick Woychik, Ph.D., noted that a lack of "departmental silos" at the Laboratory facilitates interaction among postdocs. He also pointed to the first-class scientific services available to postdocs, enabling them to focus on their research projects instead of spending all their time setting up and operating scientific instruments.
The postdoctoral associates taking the survey gave particularly high marks to the access to training, travel and research grants that the Laboratory provides, and the helpfulness of the Laboratory staff who manage the postdoctoral program.
