New strain panels added to the SMSR

BXD RI strains.
An additional 46 BXD RI strains currently held by Dr. Robert Williams at the University of Tennessee, Memphis are being added to the SMSR.  This will expand the BXD RI panel to 79 strains greatly increasing the power of this set.


New Consomic Panel. 
The addition of a second chromosome substitution panel to the SMSR, C57BL/6J-Chr#PWD/Ph/ForeJ CS panel, has almost been completed during 2007.  An additional one or two strains will complete the panel during 2008.

  • This panel was created by Jiri Forejt, University of Prague, by backcrossing the PWD/Ph inbred pure Mus musculus musculus strain to the C57BL/6J genetic background which is 80% Mus musculus domesticus.  Because most variation among inbred strains is between the subspecies musculus and domesticus this will almost be a “universal” chromosome substitution panel. 
  • This new set together with the C57BL/6J-Chr#A/J/NaJ set will cover 98% of the mouse genome, because C57BL/6J differs from A/J or PWD/Ph at 98% of the loci tested.
