The Jackson Laboratory wins Top Drawer Award from Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce

Ellsworth, Maine -- At the 58th annual meeting of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, Jackson Laboratory Executive Vice President and COO Chuck Hewett, Ph.D. accepted the Chamber's Top Drawer Award.
This commerce award is presented each year to an employer that has made "a substantial contribution to the growth, development and improvement of Ellsworth, Hancock County and the state of Maine."
During the program, Chamber member Brian Langley read a proclamation from the Maine State Legislature congratulating the Laboratory. U.S. Senators Snowe and Collins and U.S. Representative Mike Michaud also sent congratulatory messages.
Hewett thanked the Chamber on behalf of the Laboratory's 1,300 Maine employees, about 1,050 of whom live in Hancock County. "It's a pleasure for all of us to be part of an exciting business region," Hewett commented, "a region made up of people who work together to achieve great things not only for themselves, not only for their companies and organizations, but for the economy and community that we share."
The Jackson Laboratory is a nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center based in Bar Harbor, Maine. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
Hewett noted that about 95 percent of the Laboratory's revenues--totaling about $205 million this year--come from outside Maine. The institution spends most of that revenue in the state, including payroll and payments to Maine vendors, and its employee base provides year-round demand for restaurants, shops, banks, hospitals, doctors, dentists and other small businesses.
"We provide that economic stimulus while working to improve human health," Hewett said, "working to solve cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes and other complex diseases.
"The Jackson Laboratory is committed to Maine, committed to the Downeast region, and happy and proud to carry out our work on a beautiful rock in the waters of the North Atlantic," he concluded.
