New buses for Jackson Laboratory commuter routes
|Date: December 15, 2010||
Bar Harbor, Maine – The Jackson Laboratory, in conjunction with Downeast Transportation, is getting two new replacement buses for its commuter fleet.
The new coaches will serve commuters living on the Bangor and Cherryfield routes starting the week of Dec. 20. The Laboratory also operates routes to and from Franklin and Ellsworth each weekday.
According to Jill Goldthwait, Jackson’s director of government relations, the purchase was possible thanks to federal transportation funding secured by U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, with matching funds from the State of Maine and the Laboratory. “Rep. Michaud recognized the Laboratory’s need to provide safe, reliable transportation for employees, some of whom live more than an hour from Bar Harbor,” Goldthwait said. “And he appreciated the added environmental benefits of taking dozens of cars off the road.”
Through the commuter buses and participation in the GoMaine carpool program, the Laboratory reduces the number of vehicles traveling to and from Mount Desert Island each day by more than 200. The Laboratory also encourages employees who live nearby to walk or ride a bicycle to work, by providing bike racks and showers, and installing a sidewalk to connect the Laboratory to the town of Bar Harbor.
The Jackson Laboratory is a nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
