A leap forward in cancer diagnostics
Researchers at The Jackson Laboratory have discovered telltale variations in mRNA processing—the cell’s protein-building function—that correspond to cancer. The team showed that they could distinguish among similar tumor subtypes with at least 74 percent accuracy, a dramatic increase over current molecular cancer diagnostics.
Jackson Laboratory receives $1.44m federal grant for Duchenne muscular dystrophy models
A grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to The Jackson Laboratory will provide research resources for finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
JAX® Mice at work in space
JAX® Mice from The Jackson Laboratory were part of the Space Shuttle Discovery crew that lifted off from Cape Canaveral on April 5. The mice, which returned to Earth on April 19, were part of an experiment to help scientists understand the long-term effects of space environment on the immune system’s ability to fight infection. JAX® Mice are also scheduled to board the last Shuttle flight.

Jackson researchers honored with Maine Cancer Foundation’s Carroll Award, research grants
The Jackson Laboratory’s team of cancer researchers are the 2010 recipients of Maine Cancer Foundation’s Carroll Award, given each year for “extraordinary efforts to advance the path to a cancer-free future.” The Foundation also awarded grants totaling $247,500 to three Jackson cancer researchers studying leukemia, lymphoma and lung and brain cancers.

Jackson cancer investigator receives special $2.7M NIH grant for innovative cancer research
Jackson cancer researcher Chengkai Dai, M.D., Ph.D., is one of this year's New Innovator Award recipients announced by Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health. The award provides $2,695,000 over five years for Dai's research. The NIH New Innovator Award program is designed specifically to support the research ideas of unusually creative investigators early in their careers.
