Jackson Laboratory breaks ground on new research facility
| Date: August 17, 2009 |
On August 5, The Jackson Laboratory held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new research facility. Funded with $4.7 million from the Maine Technology Asset Fund, the new building will expand the institution's capacity to conduct R&D and partner with Maine companies in related commercialization activities.
Officials in attendance at the ceremony included Cathy Renault, director of the Office of Innovation in the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development; Betsy Biemann, president of the Maine Technology Institute; and Maine State Representative Elsie Flemings, as well as Jackson President and CEO Rick Woychik, Ph.D., and COO Chuck Hewett, Ph.D.
The Jackson Laboratory is a nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine. It is also the world's leading distributor of mouse models of human diseases. The new three-story, 22,500-square-foot building will house the institution's importation and isolation facilities, a receiving center for mouse models from other research institutions. The Laboratory will reconfigure the old importation and isolation space thus freed up for R&D activities, with the goal of increasing the number of new products, techniques and services that enter the commercialization pipeline.
Funding for the first phase of the building's construction was provided by a $4.7 million grant from the Maine Technology Asset Fund in August 2008. Construction, by Consigli Construction of Portland, Maine, is expected to be complete by November 2010.
