Jackson researchers net $460,576 in new research grants

Three Jackson Laboratory researchers were awarded new grants from the National Institutes of Health. The awards are part of the federal governments economic stimulus initiative known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

  • Research Scientist David Bergstrom received $197,695 from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders to study the role of certain cell enzyme complexes, known as NADPH oxidase complexes, in inner-ear disorders.
  • The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development awarded Professor John Eppig $4,759 to develop new mouse models for human infertility.
  • Research Scientist Ron Korstanje's research in locating gene mutations that alter HDL cholesterol levels in mice has $258,122 in new grant support from the National Heart, Lung and Blood institute.

The $460,576 in new grants brings the Laboratory's total ARRA funding to date to $1,343,626.

The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a facility in Sacramento, Calif. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the biomedical community.
