Mainebiz: Jackson Laboratory is Maine's 6th largest nonprofit

Bar Harbor, Maine --"Mainebiz" magazine once again ranks The Jackson Laboratory among Maine's largest nonprofit organizations. The Laboratory is the only independent research institution to make the top-15 list.
The magazine's ranking, which is based on 2006 assets, places The Jackson Laboratory sixth, following Bowdoin College, Maine Medical Center, Colby College, Bates College and Eastern Maine Medical Center. Jackson's assets are reported as $318,623,313.
With a Maine employee count of 1,292--larger than the population of 316 Maine towns--Jackson is the largest employer in Hancock County. About 93 percent of the Laboratory's revenues, including federal research grants, come from outside Maine, and at least 85 percent are spent in-state. In 2007, Jackson received 75 percent of the $66.7 million in National Institutes of Health research funding to Maine.
