Second annual Jackson Laboratory "Pink Tulip Tea" for cancer research June 12
| Date: May 29, 2008 |
Bar Harbor, Maine -- Saluting survivors of breast and other cancers, The Jackson Laboratory is presenting its second annual Pink Tulip Tea to support cancer research and the Pink Tulip Project of the Women's Cancer Fund of the Maine Cancer Foundation. The Pink Tulip Tea takes place Thursday, June 12, at 2 p.m. at The Jackson Laboratory, located at 600 Main Street, Bar Harbor.
Survivors, family members, caregivers and other members of the community are invited to come to the Laboratory to enjoy spring blooms and a tea party with Jackson cancer researchers and other employees.
The Jackson Laboratory has been a major international center for cancer research since its founding in 1929. Today, as a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, Laboratory scientists study a wide range of cancers including leukemia, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer, as well as the basic mechanisms of cancer, such as DNA damage. The June 12 event celebrates this heritage of cancer research and raises visibility for the Maine Cancer Foundation's Pink Tulip Project.
Pamela Sirois, director of the St. Joseph Hospital Regional Breast Care Center, and Wayne Wright of The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center, will join Jackson officials in making brief remarks at 2:00 in the Laboratory's dining commons, followed by tea and cookies.
A new feature of this year's event will be the presentation of the first annual Pink Tulip Tea Community Volunteer Award, celebrating the efforts of an individual making a difference in the lives of those battling cancer and their families. This year's award will be presented to Charlotte Skiff, a breast cancer survivor who started a family support program at MDI Hospital for patients and their family members.
