Jackson Laboratory in top 20 of "Maine 100" listing

The Jackson Laboratory ranks 19th in "The Maine 100," Portland Magazine's annual listing of the top firms headquartered in Maine. The listing, compiled by the business credit reporting firm Dun & Bradstreet, is based on total gross revenues from calendar year 2007.

The nonprofit biomedical research institution, based in Bar Harbor, reported $150.6 million in gross revenues in 2007, and an employee count of 1,250. The Laboratory's 2009 budget is $168.9 million, with total staff size of 1,425.

The largest employer in Hancock County, The Jackson Laboratory issues payroll to employees living in 12 Maine counties, in 72 Zip codes. Average salary is $49,662 plus benefits; entry-level jobs start at $10.25 an hour and require only a high-school diploma.

The Jackson Laboratory's mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community. Its research staff of more than 500 investigates the genetic basis of cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, diabetes and many other human diseases and disorders, as well as normal development, reproduction and aging.
