Johns Hopkins scientist with Maine ties wins top Japan Science Prize

Maine native Victor A. McKusick, M.D., University Professor of Medical Genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Japan Prize in Medical Genetics and Genomics, the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan announced today in Tokyo.
Dr. McKusick, who was born in Parkman, Maine, is a trustee emeritus of The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor. In 1959, together with Jackson scientists, McKusick co-founded the famous Short Course in Medical and Experimental Mammalian Genetics. held each year in Bar Harbor, Maine. Past Course participants and faculty comprise a "who's who" of the world's top genetics researchers. The Course will celebrate its 50th anniversary in July 2009.
"Dr. McKusick is most deserving of this award, which many in the scientific community compare in stature to the Nobel Prize," said Jackson Laboratory President and CEO Rick Woychik, Ph.D. "He is a remarkable physician-scientist and a dedicated educator. His contributions to the biomedical research community in Maine and around the world have been profound."
