Joanne M. Bean named Jackson Laboratory Director of Development

Bar Harbor, Maine - A seasoned fundraising campaigner and volunteer organizer with extensive experience in advancing nonprofit biomedical research has been named director of development at The Jackson Laboratory, effective March 19.
Joanne M. Bean, RN, BSN, MBA, joins the Laboratory after 11 years with the American Diabetes Association's Northeast Division, where she has been senior director since 1998. Based in Boston, Ms. Bean has built a wide range of partnerships with research and funding organizations in support of the ADA's mission. From 1982 to 1996, Ms. Bean was director of community health and development at Kennebec Valley Medical Center (now MaineGeneral Health).
In making the appointment, Jackson Laboratory Vice President for Advancement Michael Hyde cited Ms. Bean's "considerable skills at events-based fundraising, her demonstrated capacity to build long-lasting and powerful relationships with volunteers, and her accomplishments as a team-builder."
The independent, nonprofit Jackson Laboratory is based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with facilities in West Sacramento, Calif. Its research staff of more than 450 investigates the genetic basis of cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, diabetes, and many other human diseases and disorders, as well as normal mammalian development and bioinformatics. The Laboratory is also the world's source for nearly 3,000 strains of genetically defined mice, home of the Mouse Genome Database and many other publicly available information resources, and an international hub for scientific courses, conferences, training and education.
Ms. Bean and her family are from Manchester, Maine. She is married to Paul Bean, who is a professional educator of 31 years' standing in the Maranacook Community school system. Their son Brian is a high school junior at Maranacook and their daughter Shannon is a student in the College of Science at Rochester Institute of Technology.
