Michael E. Hyde Appointed Jackson Laboratory Vice President for Advancement

Bar Harbor, Maine - The Jackson Laboratory has named Michael E. Hyde of Alfred Station, N.Y., as vice president for advancement.

As vice president for university relations at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., where he has served since 1997, Mr. Hyde has led the private institution's fundraising, alumni, public relations and state government liaison efforts.

Jackson Director Rick Woychik, Ph.D., cited Mr. Hyde's outstanding record of accomplishments as a development executive. "All of us on the team that worked to recruit Mike are delighted that he will be bringing his extraordinary skill, energy and vision to the senior management team at The Jackson Laboratory."

Mr. Hyde's achievements at Alfred include completing a campaign of $82.6 million in June 2000, launching a $150 million drive with two eight-digit gifts, building the institution's national visibility, and creating a private corporation to rebuild the Alfred downtown business district.

"It is a singular honor to join the Jackson Laboratory team," Mr. Hyde said. "This is a marvelous organization that contributes mightily to the quality of life in Bar Harbor, in the state of Maine and around the world. I am eager to help the Laboratory achieve even greater things in the future."

Mr. Hyde holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia. His early professional life was in academic advising and career counseling, first at his alma mater, then at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and Adrian College in Adrian, Mich.

At Adrian Mr. Hyde was promoted to associate vice president for development and college planning coordinator, where his duties included soliciting corporate, foundation and government gifts. Before joining Alfred University, he built his fundraising experience at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, and Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.

Mr. Hyde plans to join the Laboratory in June 2006.

The Jackson Laboratory, founded in 1929, is the world's largest mammalian genetics research institution, with facilities in Bar Harbor, Maine, and West Sacramento, Calif. Its research staff of more than 450 investigates the genetic basis of cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, diabetes and many other human diseases and disorders. The Laboratory is also the world's source for nearly 3,000 strains of genetically defined mice, home of the Mouse Genome Database and many other publicly available information resources, and an international hub for scientific courses, conferences, training and education.
