Jackson Laboratory appoints Robert Alvine as Board of Governing Trustees Chair

Bar Harbor, Maine -- The Jackson Laboratory has appointed the business leader and philanthropist Robert Alvine of Woodbridge, Conn., as the chair of its Board of Governing Trustees.
Mr. Alvine is founder, chairman and CEO of i-TEN Management Corporation and i-TEN Capital, leading strategic business and financial management and private-equity investments for the past 19 years. The nonprofit Jackson Laboratory is one of the world's largest genetics research institutions, with 35 research groups studying virtually every human disease as well as normal development and aging.
In announcing the appointment, Jackson Director Rick Woychik, Ph.D., said, "With his outstanding 46-year business career, Bob is a seasoned, dynamic, world-wide business leader, entrepreneur and active philanthropist, with a clear devotion to the mission of The Jackson Laboratory. He has an extensive background in successfully leading a remarkable variety of companies, as well as wide experience in the governance of nonprofit organizations."
Mr. Alvine replaces New York attorney Donald A. Stern, Esq., as board chairman. Mr. Stern has transitioned to the role of life trustee of the Laboratory after serving as chair for five years.
The Laboratory has a two-part governing structure. Mr. Alvine joined the Laboratory's Corporation in 1995 and was subsequently elected to the Board of Governing Trustees, where he has taken active and leadership roles in many committees. His prior board experience includes chairing the Board of Governors of the University of New Haven, a board on which he still serves.
Mr. Alvine's corporate background includes 17 years in leadership roles at Celanese Corporation and 10 years with Uniroyal Corporation, where his roles included serving as CEO of the billion-dollar Engineered Products and Services group of companies. A graduate of Harvard Business School, Mr. Alvine did post graduate work at Syracuse University and earned a B.A. with honors in science with majors in chemistry and chemical engineering at Rutgers University.
The Jackson Laboratory, founded in 1929, has facilities in Bar Harbor, Maine, and West Sacramento, Calif. Its research staff of more than 450 investigates the genetic basis of cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, diabetes, and many other human diseases and disorders. The Laboratory is also the world's source for nearly 3,000 strains of genetically defined mice, home of the Mouse Genome Database and many other publicly available information resources, and an international hub for scientific courses, conferences, training and education.
