Bar Harbor, MaineBiology of Reproduction, a leading journal in the field of reproductive sciences, has named Jackson Laboratory Senior Staff Scientist John J. Eppig as Editor in Chief, and Adjunct Senior Staff Scientist Mary Ann Handel as Assistant Editor in Chief.

The journal of the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR), Biology of Reproduction publishes original, peer-refereed scientific papers submitted by scientists worldwide on the development and function of ovaries and testes, mechanisms of fertilization, embryo development and maintenance of pregnancy. The journal is ranked as one of the top journals in the field of reproductive biology by the Institute of Scientific Information.

Scientists Handel and EppigDrs. Eppig and Handel were chosen at the recent midwinter meeting of the SSR Board of Directors. SSR President P. Landis Keyes noted, “We are extremely fortunate that our journal will be guided in the future by such highly qualified and dedicated individuals.”

Dr. Eppig, who joined The Jackson Laboratory in 1975, is a leading authority in reproductive biology. He achieved the first complete development of mammalian oocytes (precursor egg cells) outside of a body including in vitro follicle development, egg growth and maturation, fertilization, and birth of live young via foster mothers. He also originated the concept of a "regulatory loop" in which communication between the oocyte and companion granulose cells is essential for normal oocyte and follicle development.

Dr. Handel, a world-renowned expert in germ cell biology, is conducting research in Dr. Eppig’s laboratory while on a sabbatical leave from the University of Tennessee. She has been an active collaborator with several investigators at The Jackson Laboratory and was named an adjunct senior staff scientist of the Laboratory in February.
